Critical care

What sets ICU beds apart from a ward bed?

Critically ill patients need to be repositioned often, must be ready for resuscitation within seconds and have X-rays taken without being moved: the bed therefore has to offer more electric adjustments, a CPR release and a radiolucent surface.

In ICU beds every function has a precise clinical purpose. The backrest, leg rest and height adjustments are electric and can be operated from several points, so staff do not have to lift sections by hand. Platform tilting helps with haemodynamic and respiratory management, while the battery keeps the adjustments working even if the mains supply fails.

Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg

They tilt the whole platform towards the head or the feet. On the Guess 401 and the K012 / ES-5M these movements are electric.

Lateral tilt

The K012 / ES-5M has a fifth motor that tilts the platform sideways, useful for repositioning the patient and making care manoeuvres easier.

CPR

A CPR button on the K012 / ES-5M, manual CPR handles on both sides of the backrest on the Guess 401: the backrest returns flat for resuscitation.

Radiolucency

The mattress platform is translucent to X-rays and covered in ABS: radiographs can be taken without transferring the patient.

Self-charging battery

It keeps the bed working during power cuts, when the patient cannot be left in an unsuitable position.

Separate controls

The K012 / ES-5M has a separate remote panel and nurse panel; the latter can switch itself off if left unused or used without authorisation.

LOTUS

Bed for delivery and obstetric surgery

A single bed for pregnancy, labour and delivery: the configuration changes in a few seconds and the patient does not have to be moved from one bed to another. Three Linak motors adjust the backrest, height and Trend/Reverse Trendelenburg from the control panel. The side rails fold away under the platform and all parts have an antimicrobial treatment.

  • High-density memory foam mattress, antimicrobial, waterproof, flame-retardant and sealed cover
  • Emergency backrest release and battery for power failure
  • Retractable motorised fifth wheel, two speeds, complete with accessories and customisable
LOTUS

How does the LOTUS Power Assisted Drive system work?

It is a motorised, retractable fifth wheel controlled from the push handles: it allows the patient to be transferred from the labour room to the operating theatre with one hand, even on slopes or uneven floors.

Compared with a standard fifth wheel, the system reduces the force needed to start moving and the steering effort by up to 50%. The switch on the handles selects two speeds: with the tortoise symbol the bed does not exceed 2 km/h, with the rabbit symbol it reaches 6 km/h. In an emergency the operator controls the speed without taking their hands off the bed.

How to choose

How do you choose between ICU beds?

If you need lateral tilt and a CPR button, the reference model is the K012 / ES-5M; if the preset Fowler, Vascular and Auto Contour positions and a minimum height of 38 cm matter most, choose the Guess 401.

Both ICU beds run on 220 V with a 24 V output and have a battery and a radiolucent surface. The choice depends on the unit's protocols, the most frequent manoeuvres and who uses the controls. For infectious or immunocompromised patients, consider instead the beds with an isolation chamber among our biocontainment devices. For other departments, see the overview of hospital beds.

ICU beds are medical devices; the European regulatory framework is Regulation (EU) 2017/745. Novamed S.R.L., based in Villafranca Tirrena (Messina), delivers throughout Italy and is qualified on MePA, SINTEL, EMPULIA and ETOSCANA, the Italian public e-procurement platforms.

FAQ

Questions about ICU beds

Which of the ICU beds has lateral tilt?

The K012 / ES-5M: its fifth motor tilts the platform sideways, in addition to handling Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg.

Do the ICU beds keep working without mains power?

Yes. The Guess 401 and the K012 / ES-5M have a self-charging battery; LOTUS also has a battery for power failures.

Can X-rays be taken with the patient in bed?

On the Guess 401 and the K012 / ES-5M the mattress platform is translucent to X-rays and covered in ABS.

Can LOTUS also be used for transport?

Yes. Alongside our ICU beds, LOTUS has a motorised fifth wheel that allows transfer from the labour room to the operating theatre, with a maximum speed of 2 or 6 km/h.
