What they are for

What are sterilisation containers used for?

Sterilisation containers are rigid, reusable boxes in which instruments are packed, sterilised and then stored until they are needed, protected from contamination during storage and transport.

Compared with disposable pouches and wraps, a rigid container protects the instruments from knocks and can be reused for many cycles. The filters fitted to the container let the sterilising agent pass through and act as a barrier once the cycle is complete. A label records the cycle information, so staff know when the contents were processed.

Sterilisation containers are therefore part of the reprocessing pathway for reusable devices, which in every facility follows the procedures set by the central sterile services department and the infection control committee.

Prevention

Why does sterilisation matter in infection prevention?

Reusable instruments come into contact with tissue and mucous membranes: if they are not sterile they can carry micro-organisms from one patient to another, contributing to healthcare-associated infections.

Infections acquired during a hospital stay or treatment, also known as nosocomial infections, lengthen hospital stays and take a toll on patients' health and on the costs of healthcare facilities. Preventing them relies on several measures working together: hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, correct management of devices and sterilisation of instruments. For isolating and transporting infectious patients, see our biocontainment devices.

Data and recommendations at European level are published by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Use and care

How to manage sterilisation containers over time

The container is reusable, but some components need to be checked and replaced: the gasket after 1000 cycles, disposable filters at every cycle, and reusable filters according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Gasket

Keep track of the cycles carried out: the silicone lid gasket is reusable for 1000 sterilisation cycles.

Filters

Choose between disposable paper filters and reusable fabric or Teflon filters, depending on how your sterile services department is organised.

Label

Fill in the side label with the start and end date of sterilisation, so whoever opens the container knows when it was processed.

Before each cycle, check that the base, lid, lock and gasket are intact and that the lid closes properly. For first aid in facilities and public spaces, Novamed also supplies the Saver One semi-automatic defibrillator.
