MRI-compatible equipment for magnetic resonance rooms
Stretchers and wheelchairs built without ferromagnetic parts: the MRI-compatible equipment supplied by Novamed S.R.L. is designed to take the patient into the magnetic resonance imaging room.
- 304 stainless steel, aluminium, plastic
- Made to order
- Delivery throughout Italy
Why does an MRI room need MRI-compatible equipment?
The magnet of an MRI scanner generates a very strong static magnetic field, which is active even when no scan is under way. A ferromagnetic object brought into the room can be pulled forcefully towards the magnet: this is why stretchers and wheelchairs must be non-magnetic products or at least declared compatible with the MR environment.
Projectile effect
Iron and ferromagnetic steels are drawn towards the magnet with an acceleration that increases as they get closer. A large object, such as a standard stretcher, can strike the patient and staff or become stuck against the scanner.
Image quality
Ferromagnetic materials close to the examination area disturb the homogeneity of the field and can cause artefacts in the images. Non-magnetic materials such as plastic, aluminium and austenitic steels reduce this problem.
Controlled access
Facilities organise the area around the magnet as a controlled-access zone. Any equipment that enters it must be checked and labelled according to the manufacturer's instructions.
In Italy, the Ministry of Health sets the safety standards for the installation and use of magnetic resonance equipment. Internationally, equipment is classified as "MR Safe", "MR Conditional" (usable under specified conditions) or "MR Unsafe": the labelling of each individual product should always be checked before use.
Our MRI-compatible equipment
Two lines designed for diagnostic imaging departments: a stretcher for transporting and preparing the patient, and a wheelchair for patients who can remain seated until they reach the scanner room.

Non-magnetic stretcher for magnetic resonance imaging
A single-weld structure made entirely of grade 304 stainless steel or aluminium alloy, designed not to interfere with magnetic fields during imaging examinations. It has an adjustable backrest, folding stainless steel side rails and an adjustable, removable IV pole. On the HO-709 model, height and Trendelenburg are also adjustable and a 5 cm mattress is included.
- 360-degree swivel castors with diagonal locking
- Oxygen cylinder holder, mattress included
- Load capacity of 180-200 kg depending on the model
- Compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Non-magnetic wheelchair
A wheelchair available in two versions, 100% plastic or non-magnetic aluminium. Because it has no magnetic parts, it is also suitable for settings other than diagnostics.
- Diagnostic imaging and magnetic resonance departments
- Environments in contact with water
- Security checks at airports, courts, government buildings and jewellery businesses
How to choose between a non-magnetic stretcher and wheelchair?
The choice between these two items of MRI-compatible equipment depends on the patient's condition and the route to the scanner: the stretcher is for patients who must lie down, the wheelchair for those who can sit.
Bedridden patients or patients who need monitoring
The non-magnetic stretcher lets you transfer the patient lying down, with drip and oxygen in tow, as far as the MRI table. For transfers in accident and emergency and between departments, outside the MRI zone, our emergency stretchers are more suitable.
Independent or partly independent patients
The non-magnetic wheelchair is lighter and takes up less space. It may also interest private customers who need a wheelchair without metal parts: see the page on aids for older and disabled people.
How can you purchase Novamed MRI-compatible equipment?
Healthcare facilities, public bodies and private customers can request a price and data sheet directly from Novamed S.R.L.; Italian public administrations can also order through MePA, SINTEL, EMPULIA and ETOSCANA, the public e-procurement platforms.

Questions about MRI-compatible equipment
What is the non-magnetic stretcher made of?
The structure is made entirely of grade 304 stainless steel or aluminium alloy, with folding stainless steel side rails.
What is the load capacity of the stretcher?
The load capacity is 180-200 kg depending on the model (HO-708, HO-708A, HO-709).
What are the differences between the two wheelchairs?
The material: one version is made entirely of plastic, the other of non-magnetic aluminium. They are identified by model numbers W101 and W102.
Can I use this MRI-compatible equipment with any scanner?
The compatibility of MRI-compatible equipment should be checked with the facility's MR safety officer, comparing the product data sheet with the characteristics of the scanner. We can send you the documentation for the model on request.
